  • The Mammalian Holding Zone is purpose built to care for animals under conditions of standard temperature (20-23 Celsius) and relative humidity (30-70%) with a 12 h light/dark cycle (lights on between 6am and 6pm).
  • Please click here to enquire about diets used in the Mammalian core.
  • If you wish to hold animals under different conditions of lighting or temperature, or feed your animals with a modified diet, please contact us by clicking here.​
  • You must never bring animals or tissues/cell lines into the Chinese University of Hong Kong yourselves, otherwise you may compromise the research of others.
  • You must always comply with the Law, University regulations, and the Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee.
  • If you have questions or concerns relating to the use of animals, or wish to make a report of any kind, please click here.

Caring for Different Species

  • Holding is available for rat (several strains), mouse (several strains, including genetically modified), hamster (LATIN NAME), shrews (Suncus murinus) and ferrets (Mustela putorius furo), although holding for other species may be accommodated upon special request.

Types of Caging

  • Mammals may be housed in standard caging, or in individually ventilated cages (IVC), with environmental enrichment being used wherever possible.​
  • Caging and bottles must be returned to the Animal Holding Core after use for professional cleaning.
